We are a fitness based online community founded by 4 veterans in April 2013. After spending multiple years in the military we have come to love (sometimes by force) physical fitness. We are so passionate about fitness we want to share our experiences, advice, and struggles with other people in hopes to inspire, motivate, and guide them to a healthier life style.
Our project, GYMPIRE, is important due to the statistics that we, as Americans are facing. The United States has earned the title as the most overweight country in the world. According to the American Heart Association 154.7 million American adults and 23.9 million American children are either overweight or obese (AHA, 2013). If we continue the path that we are on, by 2030, obesity healthcare costs could reach an estimated 861 to 957 billion dollars (AHA, 2013). It is a common misconception that we can simply go on a fad diet to lose the weight that we put on. However, statistics have shown that 80-95% of all diets fail, and thereby individual is unable to maintain the weight that they have lost. The reasons behind this are simple; most diets are a short term, do not include challenging physical activity, and do not educate the individual on what they need to do to make a lifestyle change.
At GYMPIRE we want to provide a dynamic, well organized social media platform where people of all fitness levels can interact, provide support, inspire, and motivate each other to achieve a healthier lifestyle. The concept behind GYMPIRE is to empower the user by providing fitness and nutrition based education, the ability to log their fitness routines and the foods that they eat, metrics/analytics, trainer designed workouts, and nutritionist developed meal guidelines – at no cost.
